Realizing Genius Homeschool Conference - 2022

Gina Petonito, PhD. is a retired university professor of sociology, who focused on teaching writing in nearly all her courses. Additionally, she volunteered in the writing center at a college preparatory high school where she tutored and line edited student writing from middle to high school. Today, Gina is founding member of Writing YOUR Way, LLC, where she helps children and adults hone their writing styles and voices. Gina had her first and only child at age 45 and home schooled him part time. Together she and her son created numerous fanciful worlds that shifted as he grew older. Today, her son is a university STEM student, and they keep alive many of the stories they shared, embroidering new details, crafting new characters, and fashioning new plot twists.

Presentation:

Fostering Fabulous Fiction

Would you like to help your child create their own fictional world? Fiction can be an excellent tool for your child to explore their feelings, try out new ideas, or just express their creativity. Researchers have found that writing fiction helps your child learn to read and write, exercise their imagination, clarify their thinking, and entertain themselves and others, among other benefits. This session will provide you with the nuts and bolts of fiction writing. I will cover character, plot, setting, theme, point of view,  and dialogue. I will also focus on ways to help your child get started writing, find their writing style and blast through writing blocks.
